Varicose veins, What are they, Who gets them?

Varicose veins are enlarged sometimes twisted veins. The veins most commonly affected are those in your legs. That's because standing increases the pressure in the veins of your legs.  30 % of the population is affected.  It is often hereditary. If you have them your parents likely had them too.

The reason people get varicose veins is that the valves have stopped functioning properly and the blood pools in the affected veins. This can lead to many problems. Symptoms can be aching, heaviness, pain, cramping, restless leg and when severe; skin changes and ulcers can appear.

There is an easy treatment for this problem!

Spider Veins and Tributary veins

Spider veins, and tributary veins are smaller than varicose veins. They are usually blue or red. They may look like tree branches or spider webs. Spider veins can usually be seen under the skin, but they do not make the skin bulge out like varicose veins do.  They are not just a cosmetic issue as they often are a tip off that severe varicose vein pathology exists.  Spider veins usually appear because there is a deeper problem.  Come let us evaluate you to see if you need treatment.

Vein Treatment, Minimally Invasive

Evaluation:
Before treatment begins we need to evaluate your legs with Ultrasound to determine if you have reflux in your veins.  Reflux is what causes the Varicose veins and if it exists, and you are having symptoms then treatment is what you need.  Since each person is different we map out your veins and craft an individualized treatment for you. Before treatment begins most people will need to wear compression stockings for a while.  We specialize in treating people for medically needed vein issues.

Sclerotherapy

If treatment is indicated the procedure is simple and straight forward.  For the larger veins access is made with a small catheter and a foam Sclerosing agent is used.  We most commonly use a medication called Varithena which is safe and effective.  Please visit the Varithena web site for more information.

Sclerotherapy is safe and effective if done correctly. It only requires local anesthesia and can be done in your our office.

Laser Treatment

Some veins can not be treated with Foam Sclerotherapy  and these can be treated with Laser fibers.  This is very effective and just like foam treatment the varicose veins will fade.  Most patients feel relief almost immediately. This is also an office based procedure.

Spider Vein Treatment

Many people have these veins and they do not like how they look.  Treating these by themselves, though satisfying, may not work as they are usually there because of underlying varicose vein disease. Come talk to us about this!
